Emily Mary
Tolman married Herbert Hoggett in
1896 at Swaffham - Jun quarter (4b 693)
Herbert was born about 1869 at Threxton the son of
James Hoggett a Bricklayer of Threxton born
about 1820 at Little Cressingham and his wife Mary
Ann Reeder born about 1822 at Watton.
Emily and Hebert had
children:
[1] Herbert James Hoggett
born Sep quarter 1896* (see
below) Killed in Action 1917
[2] Elsie May Hoggett born Dec quarter 1900
Elsie married Leslie G
Howe in 1922
Elsie and Leslie had children:
[1] Margery Emily Howe
[2] Dorothy M Howe
[3] Florence J Howe
[4] Robert L J Howe
Although
Emily's bachelor brother John Tolman (1869)
was recorded as Landlord of the White Horse Tavern
Little Cressingham from 1896 - 1935 his main interest
was farming. So Emily who was still at home had become
Housekeeper/Landlady from a very early age. After
her marriage in 1896 to Herbert Hoggett he
moved into the family home.
Herbert
Hoggett (1869) died in 1900 aged just 30 leaving
his wife Emily with their son Herbert aged 4, and
eight months pregnant with their daughter Elsie.
Herbert was a bricklayer, as was his father and brothers
but his early death was due to phthisco (tuberculosis).
Herbert died in the October of 1900 and his daughter
Elsie was not born until the November. Although
Emily is officially recorded as Landlady to the White
Horse Inn from 1935 - 1956 the evidence shows it is
more likely that Emily's involvement in the business
goes back to her childhood after the death of her
father John Tolman (1826) when her mother (Matilda)
moved to the Tavern in 1878.
Life must have been very busy for Emily for apart
from the everyday running of the White Horse there
was also the reasonability of looking after not only
her own children but the orphan children of her deceased
brother Walter Tolman (1861) and his wife Amanda
who tragically died at the early age of 34 as can
be seen in the 1901 census below.
