Arthur perished when the Asiatic
Prince went missing in the Pacific Ocean on or about
March 1928 .
The Asiatic Prince.
in 1928, after embarking from Seattle, only a
few weeks into her maiden voyage, the ship vanished
in the Pacific Somewhere between Yokohama and
Shanghai. It wasn’t reported until later
that the ship was carrying over $250,000 in gold
bullion intended for a Chinese bank in Shanghai.
Though vessels from both the US and Japanese military
searched tirelessly for the ship, she was never
found. The last distress call from the Asiatic
Prince was one inauspicious word, “Pirates.”
Was she plundered or did she sink with her treasure
intact?

1941: Death
record – Cubitt Tolman and Violet
M Tolman at Acle – Jun quarter (4b 52)
Cubitt and Violet formerly
of Park Farm, Southburgh had taken over the tenancy
of Lower Wood Farm Mautby near Great Yarmouth in
October 1940. Early in 1941 the area was subjected
to a lot of enemy action. On the last day of March
bombs were dropped on the Lower Wood Farm and one
hit the gable end of their barn. Unfortunately for
Cubitt and Violet, just at that very moment they
were standing by the farm gate with their dog, all
three were killed instantly.
It is thought the Germans
were trying to destroy the World War Two heavy anti-aircraft
battery which was nearby at Mautby. The site was
called YH4 and consisted of a group of heavy anti-aircraft
(HAA) batteries portioned to protect Great Yarmouth.
The gun emplacements and the command post are still
standing. The Tolman's were not the only casualties
of the forties as a Lincoln Bomber (NHER 13680)
crashed in the parish during the night of 24 September
1947, possibly after being struck by lightning during
a thunderstorm. All nine of the crew were killed
and they are commemorated with a plaque in SS Peter
and Paul’s Church in Mautby.
This young married
couple are buried in the Mattishall Cemetery on
Burgh Lane. Violet was the eldest daughter of Herbert
and Sabina Wire. Records show the family name recorded
as 'Wire' and 'Weir' although the family spelt it
'Wire'. The Wire's were farmers and land owners
in Mattishall. They lived at Moat Farm on Dereham
Road. At one time they owned the field where the
Parker Road Housing Estate is now standing and it
was decided to name one of the roads after them
but due to the confussion with the spelling of their
name we have 'Wier Ave' when it should have been
'Wire Ave'.
After Violet and Cubitt were so tragically killed
they were brough home to Mattishall to be buried
in the Mattishall Cemetery family plot where the
young couple who had only been married for six years
were laid to rest with other members of the Wire
family.
Cubitt and Violet
Tolman are mentioned on the Mattishall Village
Memorial website as Civilian War Casualties
