1890: Dec 25 - Tragedy at Little Cressingham Mill

Samuel Goddard from Carbrooke hired Little Cressingham Mill in 1890 but his tenancy ended in tragedy on Christmas day 1890.
There is gravestone in the churchyard inscribed:

‘In loving memory of Samuel and Elizabeth Goddard
who died from suffocation December 25th 1890 aged
36 and 37 years’

It appears that on Christmas Day that year it being a very cold day the couple took up to their bedroom a bucketful of hot coals to keep themselves warm. They were found the next morning by Jacob Macrow when he went to feed the horses. The local police constable and innkeeper of the White Horse, John Tolman, with his brother Fred Tolman broke in and found the couple dead in bed.

Mable Violet Tolman (Violet) married Ashley William Flatt in 1943 at Wayland - Sep quarter (4b 554)
Ashley William Flatt was born in 1883 in the Guiltcross district of Norfolk. He married his first wife Ethelreda Bunkall in the Sep quater of 1912. Ethelreda died age 63 in the Dec quarter of 1939. They appear not to have had any children.
Violet and Ashley lived at Rokeles Hall, Watton. - I understood that Ashley had been the Squire of Watton
Ashley William Flatt died January 17, 1963 at Wayland - Mar quarter (4b 1105) age 79 - The hall was sold.
Violet then moved to a Chalet Bungalow on Dereham Road. She died about 1982
