John Taylor/Tyler
1778 About

Husband:

John Taylor/ Tyler

Born:

Abt 1778 ? unknown
Died:
Buried:
Parents unknown
&
Ann Taylor ?

Tim Wooltorton has sent me a copy of the 'Shotesham Baptism Records'. From these records we have discovered that James Taylor born 1809 was actually baptised January 12, 1809 and recorded as James Tyler the son of John and Elizabeth Tyler. In the same book entries show other siblings of James. All but two of the siblings were baptised with the surname 'Tyler', William baptised 1813 and Robert baptised 1816 were recorded as 'Taylor'. There are no other entries of Taylor in the book so we must assume that for some reason there was a mix up with the surname. Could it have been through dialect or a transcription error, perhaps we will never know.

I have searched for John and Elizabeth's marriage record to ascertain the surname by which they married without success. It would appear the John and Elizabeth where not born in Shotesham as I cannot find a John in the Baptism records of Shotesham which go back to 1567 but if what I have uncovered (below) is correct they may have married in Stoke-Holy-Cross, Elizabeth's birth parish.

My belief is the information in this paragraph could be our John, as I have found no other that fits the facts. I have found a John (age 72) and Elizabeth (age 74) 'Taylor' in the 1851 census living at Wolfer Green, Howe, near Loddon that to-date appears to be our John mainly for the fact that I have not been able to find any other information of a John and Elizabeth Taylor/Tyler in the area. What makes it more positive is by the fact that living just next door was Thomas Taylor (age 34) born Shottisham, Norfolk which could be the youngest son of John and Elizabeth although so far I have not been able a baptism record of Thomas but I now believe him to be the son baptised Robert .

1851: Census: Address: Wolfer Green, Loddon - Census Place: Howe Loddon, Norfolk

John Taylor - Head - age 72 - Farm Lab - born Earsham, Norfolk
Elizabeth Taylor - Wife - age 74 - Famr Lab wife - born Stoke, Norfolk

Thomas Taylor - Head - age 34 - Farm Lab - born Shottisham, Norfolk
Hannah Taylor - Wife - age 32 - Farm Lab - born Yelverton, Norfolk

Going to John's stated birth place Earsham, and looking through the parish records I have found only one baptism of a John Taylor which reads:
1780: June 12. Baptism of John Taylor - natural son of Ann Taylor

I have not been able to find any marriage details of John and Elizabeth. Elizabeth states in the 1851 census that she was born at 'Stoke' where by tradition we would assume they would have married. I would also assume Stoke to be Stoke-Holy-Cross, sadly I have no records of this parish so it is still work in progress.

This is all a bit of a muddle at the moment so any help would be appreciated.

Please note: This is only my thoughts so it all needs checking....

Shotesham is a village in South Norfolk which lies approximately 5 miles south of Norwich. It sits next to Stoke Holy Cross and Saxlingham Nethergate in the valley of the River Tas.
Note: The spelling of Shotesham differs on various parish and census records over the years. This can be confussing and can give the impression that they refer to Shottisham in Suffolk but all the information on this page clearly relates to the Shotesham Village in Norfolk.

1780: June 12. Baptism of John Taylor - natural son of Ann Taylor - If this John and the John in the 1851 census (below) are the same, he would have been about 1 year old when he was baptised.

What happened to Ann after this, did she go home, did she marry although it is apparent John kept the name Taylor and what took him to Shotesham where the above family were baptised, more than likely it was work but there is a gap of about 30 years. Perhaps some more information may come to light in the future.

Tim Wooltorton sent the following...
1801: Nov 5 - Marriage at Stoke Holy Cross, Norfolk
John Tyler a Single Man married Elizabeth Whiting a Single Women by Banns
By me Samuel Leggett Curate.
Witness: Susan Sparrow and William Sparrow.
Notes: Bride, Groom and Witnesses signed with a 'x'

John's first child was baptised in 1802 with others through to Robert 1816, I have not been able to find a baptism for Thomas but I now believe him to be the son baptised Robert in 1816.

1851: Census: Address: Wolfer Green, Loddon - Census Place: Howe Loddon, Norfolk
John Taylor - Head - age 72 - Farm Lab - born approx 1779 at Earsham, Norfolk
Elizabeth Taylor - Wife - age 74 - Famr Lab wife - born approx 1777 at Stoke, Norfolk

Could be Thomas's parents
1851:
Census: Address: Wolfer Green, Loddon - Census Place: Howe Loddon, Norfolk
Thomas Taylor - Head - age 34 - Farm Lab - born Shottisham, Norfolk
Hannah Taylor - Wife - age 32 - Farm Lab - born Yelverton, Norfolk

I have found some possible death records of John and Elizabeth - but they need checking......

1856: Death of Elizabeth Taylor - Loddon - Sept quarter 4b / 12 - if this is correct Elizabeth would have been age 80

1856: Death of John Taylor - Loddon - Dec quarter 4b / 125 - if this is correct John would have been age 78

Unfortunately the information from the internet does not give their his ages at the time of death but looking through the index there are no others that seemed likely. I only have access to Loddon's parish burial records up to 1851 so more work to be done.

I have also searched the Earsham baptism records for Ann's birth hoping to find her parents but nothing - was she born in another parish? - was she at Earsham working in service?

Looking now at all the information we have on our 'Taylor' family and seeing how it has grown over the these 250 years, spreading it's wings over the UK and even worldwide it is hard to believe it was all started by a young girl Ann Taylor born in the mid 1700's. As we cannot find her birth place Ann could have been living away from her family if so most properly she was in service where by means we will never know she found her herself pregnant, the result of which was to give birth to her illegitimate son John Taylor, the rest is our history - I wonder what they would think now if they could see the results of their actions. Amazing - The big question is who was the father?

08 - Child of John Taylor (1778) and Elizabeth unknown

Thomas Taylor born about 1816 - I cannot locate this Thomas Taylor in any baptism records, but I now believe him and Robert Taylor (1816) above to be the same person - Thomas maried Hannah Moore.

1850: Marriage record - Thomas Taylor married Hannah Moore at Forehoe - Jun quarter (13 239)

Hannah Moore was born Jan 02, 1818 at Yelverton - Baprised Nov 01, 1818 at St Mary the Virgin Church Yelverton, Norfolk - Entry 39 - Daughter of John Moore a Miller of Bergh Apton and his wife Elizabeth Kemp

As I go through Parish records again I will place below anything that relates to what we are researching in a hope that one day we can string some of it together. The site I am using has some very good images of old parish records. Take a look, if you are doing research it's like a dream come true to be able to view images of the original documents for free.

Shotesham, All Saints & St Mary St Martin, Norfolk

There are no entries of the name 'Taylor' or similar recorded in Shotesham parish records before 1803
There is a reference in 1792 but I think it refers to the trade of the person.

I have found a marriage in the Shotesham Parish Records which may fit in to this family but so far no concrete evidence.
