September 23rd: The bodies of Frances,
Robert and Alan Luxton we found at
West Chapel Farm.
The bodies of Frances,
Robert and Alan Luxton, elderly siblings,
were found outside their house in the
grounds of West Chapel Farm, Winkleigh,
Devon with severe head injuries from a
shotgun. The killings sent shock waves
through the Devon countryside around West
Chapel. These were the last local members
of this line of our Luxton family that
could be traced back to the 14th century.
It is said that the Luxtons were seen
by their neighbors as reclusive anachronisms,
seemingly unaware that the world had changed
since the 19th century. It was said that
the farm was archaic but this has been
strongly argued. With the discovery of
their bodies, each shot at close range
in the head, rumors began to circulate
many that have been unfair, unjust and
un-substantiated. Putting all this aside
what ever happen in thier lives this is
a very tragic end to our story.
Frances Luxton
and her two bachelor brothers were found
dead (from shotgun wounds) in their farm,
West Chapel, at Winkleigh. All were in
their fifties or sixties. A later inquest
found that one of the brothers had committed
suicide, and that, on finding this, the
other brother then shot himself and his
sister. It was believed that the Luxtons
were upset at having to sell the farm
where they had lived all their lives.
There were no direct heirs.
