It appears Mary's husband William
had a mental issue as in 1861 we find him in
Thorpe Hospital (Mental Institution)
Nothing could have prepared
the children for what happened next for as we
see by he 1851 census three of the children
are recorded as being in the Gressenhall Workhouse.
William (son) however is an apprentice to John
Hudson of East Dereham as seen below. The three
children entering the workhouse would have been
split up, as males went one way and females
the other sexes were not allowed to mix. Life
was very grim here and for children it must
have been terrifying especially for Martha as
she did not have the support of her brothers.
In 1851 at Cressenhall ‘Mill
Piece’ (now Centenary Wood) became the
Industrial farm for training the boys and girls
in farming were the children part of this?
According to Gressenhall there
is no record of Martha of Dereham or Edward
leaving although as Edward was aged 14 in 1851
it is likely that he was put straight out to
work.
Michael left in Nov 1855 -
It is unclear
what became of the children of Mary Horne -
Lets hope they survived
