Things were about to change at Stoke Holy Cross:
In 1851 the founder Jeremiah Colman died. Later on James' son J. J. Colman took over sole charge to run the company.
In 1853 White's Directory records that "An alarming fire broke out in a spacious room used for drying starch
In 1862 the lease ended and by now the business was too large for Stoke Holy Cross Mill. Thus Colmans moved to the present site at Carrow on land bought from the Norfolk Railway to the south of Norwich.

Did John Grint work for Colman's in 1850?
After starting in 1814 at 'Bawburgh Mill' the Colman Company took over the mill at Stoke Holy Cross in 1823 when Jeremiah Colman took his adopted nephew, James, into partnership in the new firm J & J Colman. Best known for mustard, the Company made flour, starch, laundry blue and cornflour.

It is highly likely that John Grint had some connection as he is recorded in 1849 on his son's (Thomas Grint) birth certificate as a labour (maybe at Colmans?) and in the 1851 census (above) as a 'Mustard Maker Journeyman'. We find in 1869 the family was recorded as living in Kensington Place, Norwich (top of City Road, small two up & down terrace's since demolished) not far from the new factory site. Colman’s employed over 200 people at Stoke Holy Cross and like many, our ancestors would have moved or more likely have been moved to Norwich to keep their jobs as Colmans is recorded as being a very good employer of that time. Is this what brought the Grint family to Norwich? Although Kensington Place was no luxury premises they were small two up two down terrace houses with many families sharing water and toiletry facilities demolished in the 1950's as part of the Norwich City slum clearance program.

Jeremiah James Colman was something of a visionary with ideas on employment years ahead of his time. He realised a healthy and happy workforce would be more productive and took steps to achieve this. In 1864, almost twenty years before parliament made any form of education compulsory, he built a subsidised school for his employee’s children. A kitchen was set up in 1868 to provide hot meals at affordable prices, I wonder if John Grint and his family would have been part of all this? Although Thomas Grint (son of John) would have missed out on the schooling as in 1864 he would have already been working for about a year as he was 15 whether he started working at Colman's is unclear but 4 years later in 1869 when he married aged 19 he was recorded as a 'Grocers Assistant' and his father (John) a 'Shape Maker'.

1853: Marriage record
Ellen Grint married William Minns Legood at Norwich - Jun quarter (4b 284)
Ellen's husband surname was recorded as Legood at their marriage and Minns at the birth of their children
It is also noted that in the 1851 census William was a lodger of Sarah Jones (Inn Keeper) of the Kings Head, Brooke and was recorded as:-
William Leggod - Lodger - Single - 19 1832 - Wheelwright - Woodton

1831: Aug 28 - Baptism record - All Saints, Woodton, Norfolk
William Minns born Jun 18 1831 the Natural son of Martha Minns of Woodton a Domestic servant - Register no 315

Was Legood the surname of William's father or did Martha marry a Legood, nothing has been found as yet. It is apparent that Leggod ment something to William for not only was he using it as his surname in 1851 his first child was named Esther Legood Minns although it is unsure what happened to her at this time.

1881: Census - Kensington Pl, Norwich Lakenham, Norwich
William L Minns - Head - Married - 49 1832 - Carpenter - Woodton, Norfolk
Ellen Minns - Wife - Married - 45 1836 - Stoke Holy Cross, Norfolk
Albert L Minns - Son - Single - 14 1867 - Box Maker (Wood) - Norwich, Norfolk
